convoy as they were attempting to transport weapons back to hezbollah. the convoy was carrying antiaircraft and weapons. and he said this is israel's warning to the president and his regime that they will not tolerate any weapons for israel's destruction. if this happened, it's certainly an escalation. and there's some degree of confusion around this. >> it is, and before we talk about this at all, we have to remember, we're dealing with one government, the israelis, that never admit some of this action that they carry out and we're dealing with another government, the syrians, who habitually lie. we have to look at all of this. two reports, the first that this convoy, carrying amount i aircraft weapons, was struck near damascus to beirut highway, near the border, and that seems to be the most reliable sources talking about that particular attack. and then the syrian state tv has announced that no, this was in fact an attack on a military research center in the suburb of damascus. that's what they're saying has happened. and the israelis as i said, not of confirming or denying

influence in lebanon and the terrorist group hezbollah that operates out of lebanon. lebanon not only has a big board were israel, lebanon also has a big border with syria. and syria, of course, is embroiled in a raging and brutal civil war. look where the capital city of syria is relative to this map. look how close it is to lebanon and to israel, this ravaged capital city in this horrible ongoing war. and it is that geography that explains why there was an international gasp and shock today when this headline crossed, that israel had sent planes to bomb inside syria. or maybe it was on the border between syria and lebanon, depending on which headline you read and who they had asked for information on the ground. but if israel is sending bombers now deep into syria, or just over the border, does that mean this war inside syria, this two-year-old awful civil war has just gone international? specifically, has it become a war that involves israel too? and at least iranian interests, if not iran itself? did a much bigger war just start? joining us now from cairo is ayman mohyeldin. it's real

a potential of what was already a horrible, horrible situation if iran and syria, hezbollah, if they were to retaliate against israel, that would dramatically escalate what is already going on. >> reporter: certainly. very dangerous to make a prediction in this part of the world and given what is happening inside syria, particularly damascus on their back foot and perhaps prone to irrational responses. as we're seeing at the moment, most observers think that an overretaliation is unlikely. of course syria, its military heavily stretched by this civil war. particularly given how israel now denying any real involvement. hezbollah and a very delicate balance here. of course their military allied to the assad regime but they have a very cautious political role to play here. they don't want to get into a lengthy military issue with the israelis and, of course, iran. certainly leadership driven by division. many not quite sure what they could do. concerns about some sort of covert retaliation, how ever that may play out. people are waiting to see if this is vague and at times in the past 24 hou

to hezbollah in lebanon. sara sidener joins us as well as fran townsend from new york. we have reports from the united states and reports from syria. is this the same or separate attacks? >> reporter: that's the thing that needed to be sorted today. we have heard from a u.s. official indeed there was just one attack. they say israeli planes did fly over and ended up hitting an area. the question is -- what is the difference? was it a convoy that was hit that had pieces and parts of missiles or was it this research facility that syria says the israelis hit that was damaged? there is confusion over what was hit or perhaps if it was one and the same incident. what we know from senior intelligence officials who have now left the intelligence agencies here in israel and we have talked to a few of them is that this particular research facility has been a facility that they know has been part of a chain of facilities that syria runs that have been trying to create unconventional weaponry. we are talking chemical weapons. however we are told this particular facility didn't have chemical weapons in
